Capabilities like Microphotography are used for diagnostic and predictive purposes, such as determining whether the interstices of a filtration fabric are so inundated with dust penetration that a complete filter bag changeout is required. In most instances, dust penetration depth is an accurate predictor of useable filter bag life expectancy.
The image on the left shows that the dust has penetrated into the depth of the needle felt, whereas the image on the right is free of dust penetration. In this case, we used diagnostic imagery and – practical savvy – to advise our hot mix asphalt customer to clean their filter bags off-line for 24 hours to enhance the removal of an excessive dust cake, in lieu of a time-consuming complete filter bag changeout right in the midst of their production season. Micronics’ expertise provided the customer with reliable advice and a course of action for their baghouse’s filter bags.

In addition to being a predictive tool, Microphotography is also a very useful tool for determining cause of filter bag failures in baghouse operations. In this image, microphotography was used to determine that filter bag failures were caused by a poor airflow distribution within the compartment’s hopper. The erosion of the felt is evident from the micro-imagery.
