What is a Belt Press Filter?

Belt Filter Presses are used to remove water from liquid residuals and produce a non-liquid material referred to as “cake.” Dewatering solids reduces the volume of residuals, improves operation, and reduces costs for subsequent storage, processing, transfer, end-use, or disposal, among other benefits. Source:  US EPA.

We highly recommend running your wash system pressure at a higher pressure than what some manuals may state. If possible, over 100 psi is ideal.

Yes, replacing a belt is relatively easy using the proper procedures for your specific machine. In addition, as noted above, Micronics can perform the belt installation or train your team on how to do the installation, based on our years of expertise with Belt Filter Presses across many industries and operations.

A Belt Filter Press is less expensive and uses less energy than other common dewatering equipment such as screw presses or centrifuges. They are also less expensive to operate over time.

Filter Belts

Typically, under ideal conditions, the average life of a belt is 2000 hours of run time. Many factors influence the life of the felt belt including the type of sludge, condition of belt press, press design, and experience of operators running the press.

Extending belt life is dependent on several factors including machine design, plant design, maintenance, and how the machine is regularly operated. Best practices for longer belt life include:

  1. Run the belt at the optimal tension for the machine. A lower belt tension generally leads to longer belt life. Higher belt tension will have the advantage of a drier cake but leads to shorter belt life and more wear on the machine. Micronics recommends that you review your machine’s operating & maintenance manual for proper belt tensions.
  2. Maintain common wear items such as the doctor blades, wear bars, and plow chicanes.
  3. Do not exceed design tension of discharge blades. Extra weights or rachet straps will contribute to premature filter belt failure.
  4. Check the middle section of the wear bars to make sure the belt is not contacting the metal frame. This leads to premature wear.

There are several indicators that it is time for a filter belt replacement. Noticeable damage or holes worn on the filter belt is a clear sign it is time to replace a belt. If a belt is no longer cleaning well or draining properly, that is another signal to change belts. If you are running gritty sludge in your press operation, your belts may wear faster than usual.

Ideally, it is best to change out your belts on a regular schedule as part of your preventative maintenance plan. Replacing a belt after failure requires significantly more time than proactively replacing a belt before it fails.

Yes, Micronics highly recommends cleaning your belts daily. Our specially formulated Citra Solve filter belt cleaner provides aggressive concentrated cleaning to help optimize belt performance. Ultraviolet light will weaken the polyester fibers over time. Belts should never be stored outside or exposed to direct sunlight. Spare filter belts should be stored inside in a dry location with lower humidity.

Much will depend on your typical belt life and usage. However, recommended best practice is to always keep two sets of spare belts on hand. This way you are not left running without a spare belt until the new belt arrives.

Filter cloth for Belt Press filters is not micron-rated. Instead, specifications are noted for the material’s permeability in cubic feet per minute or CFM. CFM numbers vary depending upon textile type, fiber type, etc.
